The practice of focusing intensely without distractions on a cognitively demanding task, typically for an extended period. Popularized by author Cal Newport, deep work is like getting in a study zone where you’re fully absorbed in an essay or problem set — no checking your phone, no background TV, just sustained concentration. During deep work, you produce high-quality results in less time because your brain isn’t constantly task-switching. It’s the opposite of half-doing five things at once; instead, you’re all-in on one important task, which can feel challenging but also very rewarding (you’ll be amazed how much you get done!).
